Take a buffer day at the end of your next vacation

Welcome to The Upgrade, By The Way’s new series on travel hacks and hot takes. See how to submit here.

The way I traveled in my 30s is much different from the way I traveled in my 20s.

Living in Phoenix right after college, I became intimately familiar with red-eye flights back home to Ohio, often taking one Sunday and rolling straight into work Monday morning, without even stopping at my apartment. Taking those flights accomplished two very important things at the time — scoring the cheapest flight possible and squeezing every last minute out of a trip.

This kind of weekend-warrior traveling didn’t survive past my 20s. I became exhausted not having adequate time to recoup in between work and trips. When the pandemic hit in March 2020 and travel came to a halt, like many others I found myself spending most of my time alone, which allowed me

Montauk, Hamptons, Martha’s Vineyard; Summer Vacation Ruined

Photo: Getty Images/iStockphoto

Every May to September, wealthy New Yorkers who may or may not have done financial crimes flee the city to beach enclaves up and down the East Coast. Normally the moats filled with alligators are enough to keep people feeling relaxed in their second and third homes, but this summer, all is not fine in vacation town. Here, a tour through the various complaints registered by the part-time residents and full-time locals of some of the country’s most expensive Zip Codes.

Nantucket is the New England destination for rich people who love whaling culture (aesthetically) and having generational wealth that dates back further than their peers. Now, it’s being destroyed by young TikTok influencers who have discovered the island, according to at least one somewhat thin New York Post story, as a place to live out their “coastal grandmother” fantasies, upsetting some locals who share their taste.

Japan’s My Summer Vacation series is now in English, thanks to Crayon Shin-chan

The release of charming adventure game Shin chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation on Nintendo Switch this week may not seem like a momentous occasion in the annals of gaming — low-budget licensed titles rarely are. But like the recent Western debuts of Live A Live, Kowloon High School Chronicleor Moon, Shin-chan‘s new release fills an important gap in the history of video games.

Shin chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation is the first full-length game in the My Summer Vacation series to make it outside of Japan, where it’s known as Boku no Natsuyasumi. The cult-hit series about a 9-year-old running around the Japanese countryside making friends and catching bugs has never been released in English, and the series has another dormant since the fourth entry came out on PSP in 2009. While Shin chan doesn’t bear the My Summer Vacation

Bear crashes Alabama family’s Gatlinburg vacation

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WVLT) – An Alabama family was vacationing in Gatlinburg when they received an unexpected visitor.

Mckinley Sellers Poe and her family were headed out to a pirate show when her father-in-law spotted a bear.

“It walked right up to the patio and hung out for a little while,” Poe said. The bear sat on the porch for around 10 to 15 minutes and was not near a mother bear.

“I just wanted to hug him,” Poe said. Her in-laws are advised against getting too close and touching the bear. Poe said she and her family stayed a safe distance away.

If they had not, the family could have faced repercussions. A hotel in Gatlinburg reported it had to kick 10 or 15 guests in the past because they got too close to bears.

It is also illegal to come within 50 yards of a bear, according to Great

Opinion | Is It OK to Work on Vacation? Yes, If You Do It Right.

Covid and the rise in remote work accelerated this trend, especially in management, business, financial and professional occupations. But while many appreciate the new flexibility in their daily lives, and some enjoy having the ability to take a “workcation,” the bleeding of work into vacation hours has caused a lot of angst about the difficulty of “unplugging.”

Opinion Conversation
What will work and life look like after the pandemic?

Do we need to fully unplug in order to relax? I hope we can begin to understand that, for many, work is a collection of tasks, not a collection of hours in a certain place. And time is a finite resource, but one that cannot always be neatly divided into “work time” and “free time.” Taking time for yourself during the work day doesn’t make you lazy, and working a bit on vacation doesn’t make you a workaholic. Dispensing with strict

‘Desperate’ Parent Dragged for Taking Son Out of Class for Cheaper Vacation

A parent who wants to take their son on a family vacation in September at the start of the school semester because it’s “too expensive” at other times of the year has been criticized by users on Mumsnet, a UK-based online forum.

A survey of 1,126 US adults conducted in August 2021 by the American Automobile Association showed that just over half (55 percent) of American adults were planning a vacation of at least one overnight stay before the end of 2022.

In a post shared on Mumsnet’s Am I Being Unreasonable (AIBU) forum under the username Sleepregressionqueen, the parent said they needed to “unfortunately” take their family vacation in September “as otherwise it’s just [too] expensive.”

in a later post, the parent said “ideally I wouldn’t take him either, but we haven’t been on holiday since 2019! We’re all desperate for one.”

The user said there is “not much

List of ‘hidden vacation spots’ includes Minnesota’s North Shore

A nationwide list looking at the “hidden gem” vacation spots of the United States includes Minnesota’s North Shore.

While the stunning stretch of Lake Superior coast on the boundaries of Superior National Forest is no secret to Minnesotans who regularly make a beeline for it, it appears to have escaped the notice of those at destination Travel blog Via Travelers.

The website includes the North Shore in its list of “31 Best Unknown Places to Visit in the US,” praising the area for its “abundance of state parks, lakes, waterfalls, and charming A-Frame cabins.”

“If you are looking for things to do along the North Shore of Lake Superior, meander through the unbeliever hiking trails at Tettegouche State Park,” it notes. “Or, hike to the tallest waterfalls in Minnesota at Judge CR Magney State Park and camp out under the stars at Gooseberry Falls State Park.”
